Perfectly Imperfect: God uses Trauma for His Purpose
They are called dimples.
These tiny indentations on a golf ball may appear to be imperfections, giving the impression that the perfectly round ball has been damaged by a golf club. To the naked eye, the ball seems flawed and disfigured, leading one to think that a perfectly smooth golf ball would be a much better choice.
However, those tiny dimples actually serve a significant purpose. Optimally, a golf ball has between 300 and 400 dimples, and these dimples create the aerodynamic ability to be hit great distances. In fact, if the ball were perfectly round, it would not travel as far.
This was discovered by finding that chipped and damaged balls flew farther and straighter than those that were perfectly round.
I can see God lessons in the craziest things – even golf balls.
The dimples are like the traumatic events in our lives. They can leave us feeling less than perfect, having wasted so many years and opportunities. We feel damaged and disfigured by lots of different trials, experiences, and memories that we have to contend with. We don’t feel as good as those who have led more perfect lives, and those who have never experienced the ugliness in life that we have.
But, with each dimple comes a richness that God can use for an even more powerful purpose than we could ever imagine. The years and the experiences aren’t wasted. We may not accomplish more than others without the ‘dimples,’ but our traumatic experiences will not stop us from doing amazing things with the experiences we have had.
God has formed us into the version of ourselves that is perfect for the plan he has purposed for us.
