Witnessing God’s Majesty in Alaska: A God Wink

Alaska.

While I was married, I was forbidden to go on mission trips. I had to fight to participate in the couple of trips I went on. The desire to go was intense, but the abuse I had to endure to go was not worth it.

Now, however, things are different. I’m free to pursue what God has called me to do, and I am forever grateful.

Recently, I did something I had never done before—I led a mission team from my church to Eagle, Alaska, in late winter. Due to its isolation, a small mail plane was the only way to reach the village. Eagle is situated on the Yukon River and is quite remote.

Our mission was to encourage the small group of believers living there by holding revival services at night and a women’s conference during the day. It was a wonderful experience, and God fulfilled His purpose through our team. While each member returned home even closer to the Lord, I experienced an extra blessing, a little “God wink.”

One of the items on my life’s bucket list has always been to see the Northern Lights. I didn’t think I would ever have the chance, as you need to be in a very northern location during the winter to witness them.

Enter my God wink.

The people living in Eagle told us to be on the lookout during the night for the lights, so when it got really dark, I stepped outside into the cold and noticed a fine-colored mist in the sky. Grabbing my camera, I realized what we were witnessing –  beautiful, vibrant pink, green, yellow, and purple lights dancing overhead. While green hues are common, pink and purple are very rare and caused by powerful solar storms.

Just in time for me to be there.

Standing there, looking over the frozen Yukon River with mountains behind it, I saw the most vivid colors. It felt like a divine message, a wink from God, acknowledging that he knew all the years I lost, and all the times I didn’t get to go on mission, and He wanted to gift me with something that showed He loved me. He saw it all and was redeeming those lost years.

Not only was I doing what my heart longed to do, but I was also witnessing a rare display of His majesty in the sky, which reminded me that He was still in charge.

And He always was.

I may have shed a few tears.
