Honduras: Church in the lemon grass field.
Honduras.
I went to Honduras with a team from my church. Our focus was on doing Vacation Bible School for the children in the villages around Choluteca. During the day, we had wonderful times ministering to the children through Bible stories, puppets, songs, and the silliest games, like relays with chicken hats. The kids loved it, and it was amazing to see God speak to the children through the craziest, fun things.
At night, we held church in different places. It was such a wonderful experience: open windows with bats flying around, dancing to music after the service was over, working up a sweat but laughing and loving each other. There was lots of Bible study, prayer, singing, and love.
One of the nights there, we went to the little church in the lemon grass field. It was more of a tin roof with four posts. The team brought solar lights to hang around the roof so that there would be light during our church service at night.
That night, our team’s speaker spoke about being the light of the world. It was a touching devotional that spoke to both our team and the adults and children who attended.
Then the idea hit me.
In my backpack were a few things I brought to use for the kids. I had included about 50 to 100 little plastic tube bracelets that you break and shake to create glowing lights. When I packed them, I had no idea if they would even be used, but now was the time. So, at the end of the service, we handed them out. They went as fast as we could give them out—breaking each one and placing them on the wrists of both the children and the adults there.
As our time ended that night, each one who had come to the service went home, traveling on foot and horse up into the hills around the lemon grass field with their tiny glowing bracelets shining in the darkness. They scattered all around us, and we stood and watched as beams of light went into the dark hills. It brought tears. What a lesson. What an amazing God to prepare us for that moment.
“You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14
